Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

OUR COMMITMENT

We are committed to the work of diversity, equity, and inclusion so that every day, in every classroom, every student is seen, challenged, and supported. We recognize the impact of educational inequities, especially on historically underserved communities, and will be intentional in developing practical solutions that remove barriers to student achievement.

  • Students feel in control of their own learning, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, socio-economic background, and abilities. Accordingly, students in Modern Classrooms will develop a deeper understanding of academic material, experience more personalized support from their teachers, and establish stronger connections with their teachers and classmates.

  • Teachers empower students to be change makers and leaders. We provide tools, resources, and strategies that support teachers in creating equitable and inclusive classrooms. Our educators inspire students to own their learning while also providing them with individualized or small-group support to fully meet their academic and social-emotional needs.

  • Our mentors are committed to self-reflection, continuous improvement, and coaching techniques that meet the needs of diverse communities across the country and the world.

  • We understand that to effectively promote change, we must be stewards of it in the workplace. We will ensure that diversity, equity, and inclusion are at the forefront of our decision-making, recruiting practices, organization policies, advancement opportunities, and treatment of each other. Through leading by example and continuous learning from teachers, community partners, and each other, we will establish MCP as a leader in developing equity and inclusion in the classroom and beyond.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

We recognize the history of oppression that has resulted in ongoing disparities for underrepresented communities. We have a powerful opportunity to learn, share, and develop strategies that make a direct impact while leading inclusively with diversity and equity at the forefront of our work.

  • We will always ensure that any educator can learn our model for free. We will know we have done our job when EVERY educator has had the opportunity to implement blended, self-paced, and mastery-based instruction. We will continue to ensure that our model supports students with a wide range of social-emotional needs.

  • We will always encourage feedback from our staff and community, especially those who are marginalized or underrepresented. We strive to take an equity-first approach by staying aware of cognitive and implicit biases and seeking out diverse connections, experiences, and perceptions.

  • Our educators, students, parents, staff, and leaders are an important part of who we are and the movement we are working to build. We will keep asking questions, sharing culture, uplifting underrepresented voices, listening, and learning.

  • We acknowledge that the work of building inclusive and equitable environments is ongoing. We are committed to continuous learning and taking actionable steps towards organizational improvement. Additionally, It is important that we uplift those most impacted by systemic inequalities. We will continue to develop and fund programs within our organization that will provide opportunities for advancement and growth.
